2018 Writing Goals

2017 was a great writing year. I met most of my goals, and recently put up a page on the site outlining my mindset going through everything. You can check it out here. In 2018, we're going to aim for bigger and better, the most ambitious year yet in terms of writing goals.

2018 is going to be a big year

Write 200,000 words

Last year, we crushed our goal of 100,000. We doubled it. And it came out of nowhere! But, if you think real hard about that number it comes out to around 500 words a day. 500 words a day, and a full time job . . . Doable, right?

Write 20 Short Stories

Okay, here it was a little different. We did not meet our goal in 2017, so we're trying to tone it down in this category and aim for a solid 20, polished, short stories.

Publish 5 Short Stories

Last year, we published (if i'm not mistaken) 3 short stories. This year, let's aim to get 5 out there and in readers' hands. And publish means in magazines or anthologies, not on my own website. Don't get any cute ideas.

Get an Agent

I think it's time. I've grown exponentially as a writer since my first work in 2015. It's been near 400,000 words since Symbiosis was published, and I promised myself I wouldn't try publishing novels until I was confident enough to not botch it up (completely). Let's see if we can get someone in our corner this year.

Read 15 Books

Can't be a writer without first being a reader, right? Luckily, I got a long morning commute to sharpen my reading skills. Yes, I'll post what I read below.

Fifteen Empty Boxes (one per book) I'll name the novel when I finish reading it.

Complete One Polished Novel

In 2017, I wrote Red Sails, Black Sails. To this day, it is the best novel I've written, the pinnacle of my growth. Then, in November 2017, as per NaNoWriMo, I wrote the first draft of Virus: Reckoning. In 2018, I'm hoping to go through at least a couple re-writes, a couple of edits, and have the first Virus novel finished and polished.
